Mechanism

Calcium polycarbophil is a polymer of acrylic acid resin. It is poorly fermentable, absorbs water (60 times its weight), and increases fecal bulk. It may also bind bacterial toxins and bile salts.

Indications

ConstipationAcute episodic diarrhea (sometimes useful)Mild chronic diarrhea in patients with IBS (sometimes useful)

Dosing

Adult: 1–2 g/day
