Mechanism

Carboprost is a prostaglandin analogue that stimulates myometrial contractions. This action helps to reduce uterine bleeding, making it effective in treating postpartum haemorrhage caused by uterine atony, particularly when other oxytocic drugs are ineffective.

Severe postpartum haemorrhage unresponsive to ergometrine maleate and oxytocinControl of postpartum haemorrhage (due to uterine atony, especially if unresponsive to ergometrine and oxytocin)Midterm abortionMissed abortion

Dosing

Adult
BY DEEP INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION: 250 micrograms, repeated if necessary, at intervals of not less than 15 minutes.
Renal adjustment
Manufacturer advises avoid.
Hepatic adjustment
Manufacturer advises avoid in active hepatic disease.
Max dose
Total dose should not exceed 2 mg (8 doses)
