Mechanism
Cascara sagrada contains glycosides (barbaloin, chrysaloin) that are converted by bacterial action in the colon to active monoanthrones. These active forms have direct effects on enterocytes, enteric neurons, and GI smooth muscle, promoting water and electrolyte accumulation and stimulating intestinal motility.
