Mechanism
The dengue virus vaccine (CYD-TDV) is a recombinant tetravalent live attenuated virus vaccine designed to induce immunity against dengue fever. A notable concern is antibody-dependent enhancement, where cross-reactive nonneutralizing antibodies from a primary infection can enhance disease severity in subsequent infections with different serotypes.
Indications
prevention of dengue fever in individuals 9 to 45 years of age living in endemic areas, but only for persons with confirmed previous dengue virus infection (CYD-TDV)
Dosing
- Pediatric
- CYD-TDV is given as a three-dose series on a 0-, 6-, and 12-month schedule. FDA-approved for use in children aged 9 to 16 years with laboratory-confirmed previous dengue virus infection and living in an area where dengue is endemic.
Contraindications
- people who receive the vaccine and have not been previously infected with a dengue virus may be at risk of developing severe dengue if they get dengue after being vaccinated. Not approved for use in U.S. travelers who are visiting but not living in an area where dengue is endemic.
