Mechanism

Estramustine phosphate is a combination of an estrogen and chlormethine, which is an alkylating agent. It exerts an antimitotic effect by damaging DNA and interfering with cell replication. Additionally, it has a hormonal effect by reducing testosterone concentrations.

Carmustine implants are also licensed for high-grade malignant glioma as adjunctive treatment to surgery and radiotherapy.
