Mechanism
Magnesium-containing laxatives have a cathartic action believed to result from osmotic water retention, which stimulates peristalsis. They may also stimulate the release of CCK, leading to intraluminal fluid and electrolyte accumulation and increased intestinal motility.
Indications
Constipation (cathartic effect)
Contraindications
- Renal insufficiency
- Cardiac disease
- Preexisting electrolyte abnormalities
- Patients on diuretic therapy
