Mechanism

Psyllium is a hydrophilic colloid and bulk-forming agent that enhances the retention of intraluminal fluid. It resists enzymatic digestion and reaches the colon largely unchanged, where it is fermented by colonic bacteria. This action increases stool water content and propulsive contractions in the colon, while decreasing overall transit time, leading to softened and bulkier feces.
