Mechanism

Rotavirus vaccines are live attenuated oral vaccines, based on human or human-bovine reassortant rotaviruses, designed to prevent severe dehydrating diarrhea in infants.

Indications

prevention of severe dehydrating diarrhea caused by rotavirus in infants

Dosing

Pediatric
RotaTeq is administered in a three-dose schedule, at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. Rotarix uses a two-dose schedule beginning at 2 months of age.

Side effects

Serious
  • An early live attenuated vaccine (Rotashield) was withdrawn after association with intussusception (a segmental telescoping collapse of the intestine). Rare rotavirus-associated intussusception risk with infection appears slightly higher at older ages with current vaccines.
