Mechanism

Adefovir dipivoxil is an oral nucleoside/nucleotide analog indicated for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Upon intracellular activation, its active metabolite interferes with the viral DNA synthesis pathway. This primarily involves inhibiting HBV DNA polymerase, leading to the suppression of viral replication and a reduction in HBV DNA levels.

Indications

Chronic hepatitis BLamivudine-resistant chronic hepatitis BChronic hepatitis B in patients co-infected with HIV who only require treatment for chronic hepatitis B (using antivirals not active against HIV)Chronic hepatitis B in patients with decompensated liver disease (in combination with lamivudine)chronic hepatitis B (including lamivudine-resistant cases and those with concurrent HIV infection)
