Mechanism
Aldosterone enhances Na+ reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule in the kidney, with an associated increase in K+ and H+ excretion. Its action is exerted by gene-mediated increased transcription of mRNA in renal tubular cells, which directs synthesis of proteins (aldosterone-induced proteins—AIP), including Na+K+ ATPase and the β subunit of the amiloride sensitive Na+ channel. It also rapidly induces phosphorylation and activation of amiloride sensitive Na+ channel.
