Mechanism

Diphtheria toxoid is produced by deactivating the toxin isolated from Corynebacterium diphtheriae using formaldehyde or through genetic modification (e.g., CRM197). The native toxin's A subunit ADP-ribosylates eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF-2), thereby inhibiting protein translation.
