Mechanism

Tetanus toxoid induces an immune response against the tetanus toxin secreted by Clostridium tetani. The native toxin causes prolonged spasms and tetany by cleaving synaptobrevin and inhibiting neurotransmitter exocytosis in the nervous system.

Dosing

Adult
Tdap and Td are booster immunizations that offer continued protection from tetanus for adolescents and adults. Td or Tdap booster every 10 years.
Pediatric
immunization usually begins at about age 2 months, as a component of the combination DTaP vaccine

Small increase in febrile seizures.
