Mechanism
Iron isomaltoside consists of iron strongly bound to a chemically modified isomalto-oligosaccharides, theorized to lower immunogenicity due to its linear and unbranched carbohydrate moiety. The strong binding enables a controlled slow release of bioavailable iron.
Indications
iron deficiency anemia in patients with intolerance to oral ironiron deficiency anemia in patients with unsatisfactory response to oral ironiron deficiency anemia in patients with non–dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease
Dosing
- Adult
- If weight ≥50 kg: single dose of 1000 mg. If weight <50 kg: single dose of 20 mg/kg. Administer doses up to 1 g over at least 20 min. Administer doses >1 g over at least 30 min. Up to 3 doses of 500 mg can be given over 7 days. 500 mg can be administered as slow IV bolus injection (250 mg/min).
