Mechanism
Methicillin's mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) occurs due to the acquisition of a low-affinity penicillin-binding protein 2' (PBP2a), which reduces the drug's effectiveness.
