Mechanism
Provides immediate, passive immunity by supplying pre-formed neutralizing antibodies against rabies virus, bridging the gap until the recipient's active immune response to rabies vaccine develops.
Indications
Passive immunization for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) of rabies in previously unvaccinated persons.
Dosing
- Adult
- 20 IU/kg. The entire dose, if anatomically feasible, should be infiltrated at the site of the bite. Any remaining after infiltration should be administered IM at a distant site. With multiple or large wounds, dilution may be needed. If exposure involves a mucous membrane, the entire dose should be administered IM.
- Pediatric
- 20 IU/kg, administered as per adult guidelines.
