Mechanism
The rabies virus vaccine induces immunity against the lyssavirus that causes rabies. It is used both preventively before exposure and as an intervention after exposure to prevent the disease from progressing to a fatal outcome.
Indications
prevention of rabies (pre-exposure)postexposure intervention to prevent progression to fatal disease
Dosing
- Adult
- Pre-exposure: given in a three-dose series on days 0, 7, and 28. Post-exposure: given in a four-dose series on days 0, 3, 7, and 14, concomitant with two injections of rabies immune globulin on day 0. A bite victim who has been previously vaccinated should receive two doses on days 0 and 3 but does not need rabies immune globulin.
