Tazocin
Unknown
Mechanism
Tazocin (piperacillin/tazobactam) combines piperacillin, an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis via PBP binding with broad gram-negative coverage, with tazobactam, a penicillanic acid sulfone beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects piperacillin from enzymatic degradation by Class A beta-lactamases. This combination restores activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms including many Enterobacteriaceae and anaerobes, making it a workhorse empiric antibiotic for hospital-acquired infections.
