Mechanism

Telbivudine, as an oral nucleoside/nucleotide analog, is used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus infection and is thought to inhibit the HBV DNA polymerase, interfering with viral replication.

Indications

Chronic hepatitis BChronic HBV in adult patients (≥16 years) with evidence of viral replication and persistent elevations in serum aminotransferases or histologically active disease (alternative agent)Indefinite treatment for patients with cirrhosis

Dosing

is given by mouth for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection, in double therapy with peginterferon alfa, interferon alfa, or sofosbuvir, or in triple therapy with peginterferon alfa and one protease inhibitor or sofosbuvir.
