Mechanism
Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a 28-amino acid peptide that binds to VPAC1 and VPAC2 G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Both receptors primarily couple to Gs to stimulate the adenylyl cyclase–cAMP–PKA pathway, leading to the relaxation of smooth muscle. It is a potent dilator of human airway smooth muscle in vitro.
