Mechanism

Arformoterol is a selective LABA (R,R-enantiomer of formoterol) that relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, leading to prolonged bronchodilation.

Indications

long-term treatment of bronchoconstriction in patients with COPD (including chronic bronchitis and emphysema)COPD

Pharmacokinetics

Metabolism
primarily by direct conjugation to glucuronide or sulfate conjugates; secondarily by O-demethylation by CYP2D6 and CYP2C19

Contraindications

  • monotherapy for acute attacks of bronchospasm
  • acute asthma symptoms

  • Metabolic effects (increase in free fatty acid, insulin, glucose, pyruvate, and lactate)
  • Life-threatening and fatal asthma exacerbations (if used alone in asthma)
