Mechanism

Dihydrotachysterol (DHT) is a reduced form of vitamin D2. In the liver, DHT is converted to its active form, 25-hydroxydihydrotachysterol. This active form is much more effective in mobilizing bone mineral at high doses than calcitriol, allowing it to maintain plasma calcium concentrations in hypoparathyroidism.

Indications

Acute, chronic, and latent forms of hypocalcaemic tetany due to hypoparathyroidismMaintenance of plasma Ca2+ in hypoparathyroidismhypoparathyroidismfamilial hypophosphatemiaosteoporosissecondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD)Renal bone disease

Dosing

Adult
individuals, ergocalciferol or colecalciferol daily by mouth may be given to treat vitamin D deficiency; higher doses may be necessary for severe deficiency. Patients who do not respond should be referred to a specialist. Preparations containing colecalciferol with calcium carbonate p.…
