Mechanism
It is a suspension of killed B. pertussis organisms. It induces specific antibodies and also a state of diminished β adrenergic reactivity, aiding sensitization to other antigens.
Indications
Protection against whooping cough
Dosing
- Pediatric
- 0.25–0.5 ml s.c. or i.m. thrice at 4 week intervals in infants and children below 5 years.
Contraindications
- History of severe systemic reaction to previous dose (high fever with hypotonic hyporesponsive child, convulsions, alterations of consciousness, focal neurological signs)
- Children with history of convulsions
- Children with other neurological disease
Side effects
Serious
- Local pain and induration
- Severe systemic reactions (even fatal, extremely rarely)
- High fever with hypotonic hyporesponsive child
