Mechanism

This vaccine utilizes technology to bind polysaccharide from the bacterial capsule to a carrier protein (often diphtheria or tetanus toxoid), which induces type-specific antipolysaccharide antibodies and provides long-term protection, particularly in infants.

Indications

prevention of invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in infants and young children, including meningitis, bacteremia and sepsis, and pneumonia

Dosing

Pediatric
Infants are given a primary series of PCV13 at ages 2, 4, and 6 months, with a booster at 12 to 15 months.
