Mechanism

Contains 50 mg of potassium iodide per drop. Provides iodide that acutely reduces the secretion and synthesis of thyroid hormone.

Indications

preoperative period in preparation for thyroidectomyin conjunction with antithyroid drugs and propranolol in the treatment of thyrotoxic crisisprotection from radioactive iodine fallout (radiation emergency)

Dosing

Adult: 50 to 100 mg (1–2 drops) three times a day. For radiation emergency, 2 mL (130 mg) every 24 h (as directed by public health officials).

iodism (unpleasant brassy taste, burning in the mouth and throat, soreness of the teeth and gums, increased salivation, coryza, sneezing, irritation of the eyes with swelling of the eyelids, mild iodism simulates a "head cold", enlarged and tender parotid and submaxillary glands, skin lesions, gastric irritation, diarrhea, fever, anorexia, depression)

serum sickness type of hypersensitivity (fever, arthralgia, lymph node enlargement, eosinophilia)
