Mechanism
Carbocisteine is a mucolytic agent that is believed to reduce sputum viscosity. This action facilitates the removal of secretions from the respiratory tract by coughing, thereby improving airway clearance.

Dosing
- Adult
- Initially 2.25 g daily in divided doses, then reduced to 1.5 g daily in divided doses, as condition improves
- Renal adjustment
- Avoid if eGFR less than 25 mL/minute/1.73 m2
- Hepatic adjustment
- Caution in mild to moderate hepatic failure; avoid in severe hepatic failure. Max. 300 mg daily in mild to moderate hepatic failure.
- Max dose
- 2.25 g daily
Contraindications
- Active peptic ulceration
- History of peptic ulceration (may disrupt the gastric mucosal barrier)
- Peptic ulcer patients (may break gastric mucosal barrier)
