Mechanism

Glatiramer acetate is a synthetic polypeptide that binds efficiently to MHC class II DR molecules. While its precise mechanism of immunomodulation in multiple sclerosis is not fully understood, studies suggest it induces highly cross-reactive CD4+ T cells to secrete Th2 cytokines. This action is thought to downregulate the immune response to myelin antigens and activate suppressive T cells that migrate to the central nervous system.
