Mechanism

Isoprenaline is a direct sympathomimetic acting as an agonist on β1, β2, and β3 adrenoceptors, with no α action. It causes cardiac stimulation (increased rate, force, conduction) and bronchodilatation.

Indications

Maintain idioventricular rate (until pacemaker is implanted)Bronchial asthma (superseded by selective β2 agonists)Partial or complete A-V blockOvercoming partial heart blockMaintaining a sufficient idioventricular rate in complete (3rd degree) heart block (until external pacemaker can be implanted)
