Mechanism

Kanamycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, exerts its antibacterial effects by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria. This binding interferes with protein synthesis, leading to misreading of the mRNA code and premature termination of protein translation. This disruption of essential bacterial protein production results in bactericidal activity.

Indications

Preoperative preparation of the colon (in combination with other agents)Treatment of drug-susceptible tuberculosis (as an alternative to streptomycin when resistance is common or as a fourth drug in initial therapy if drug resistance is a concern)hard-to-treat nontuberculous mycobacterial infectionsdrug-resistant mycobacterium avium complexmycobacterium abscessussecond line drug in resistant tuberculosis (occasionally)gram-negative bacillary infections (only if mandated by sensitivity report)MDR-TB (included in the regimen during the intensive phase)
