Mechanism

Methylcellulose is a bulk-forming laxative that relieves constipation by increasing faecal mass, which in turn stimulates intestinal peristalsis. It also acts as a faecal softener.

Dosing

Adult
3–6 tablets twice daily by mouth
Geriatric
It may be necessary to supervise elderly or debilitated patients or those with intestinal narrowing or decreased motility to ensure adequate fluid intake.
