Mechanism

Senna, an anthraquinone stimulant laxative, increases intestinal motility. It is believed to act by increasing the activity of NO synthase and the biosynthesis of platelet-activating factor in the gut, which stimulates colonic secretion and GI motility. Nitric oxide (NO) may also contribute by stimulating intestinal secretion and inhibiting segmenting contractions in the colon, thereby promoting laxation.
