Mechanism
Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal that acts by binding to ergosterol, a component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to increased permeability and cell death. The lipid formulation, Amphotericin B Lipid Complex, is designed to reduce toxicity by preferentially binding to fungal cell membranes over mammalian cell membranes, and some fungi contain lipases that may liberate free amphotericin B directly at the site of infection.

Salvage therapy of deep mycosesTreatment of systemic fungal infections when conventional amphotericin is contraindicated due to toxicity (especially nephrotoxicity)Treatment of systemic fungal infections when response to conventional amphotericin is inadequatetreatment of mucormycosis
Dosing
- Adult
- 5 mg/kg intravenously once daily over 2 hours in 5% dextrose in water.
