Mechanism

Articaine is an amide-type local anaesthetic that works by blocking nerve impulse conduction. It inhibits the influx of sodium ions through voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, thereby preventing the generation and propagation of action potentials. The addition of a vasoconstrictor like adrenaline diminishes local blood flow, slowing its absorption and prolonging the anaesthetic effect.

Indications

Infiltration anaesthesia in dentistryDental and periodontal procedures

Consult expert dental sources. To avoid excessive dosage in obese patients, dose should be calculated on the basis of ideal body-weight.
