Mechanism

Levobunolol is a beta-adrenoceptor blocker. Beta-adrenoceptor blockers may produce benefit by blocking sympathetic activity.

Indications

GlaucomaOcular hypertensionChronic open-angle glaucomaGlaucoma (topical)

Dosing

Adult
1 drop OD (0.5% ophthalmic solution)
Geriatric
Potentially inappropriate in combination with verapamil or diltiazem (risk of heart block); with bradycardia (heart rate less than 50 beats per minute), type II heart block or complete heart block.

Contraindications

  • Asthma
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Hypotension
  • Marked bradycardia
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Phaeochromocytoma (apart from specific use with alpha-blockers)
  • Prinzmetal’s angina
  • Second-degree AV block
  • Severe peripheral arterial disease
  • Sick sinus syndrome
  • Third-degree AV block
  • Uncontrolled heart failure
  • Bronchospasm (including history of asthma or obstructive airways disease)
