Mechanism

Maraviroc is an antagonist of the CCR5 chemokine receptor. It acts as an allosteric, noncompetitive antagonist that binds to the CCR5 receptor on the patient's CD4 cells. This binding denies HIV entry into the host cell.

Indications

CCR5-tropic HIV infection in combination with other antiretroviral drugs in patients previously treated with antiretroviralsHIV-infected adults who have baseline evidence of predominantly CCR5-tropic virusHIV (added to optimized background therapy in patients who have already been treated with several regimens and who have CCR5-tropic HIV infection; tropism must be proven)
