Drug interactions

Alcohol
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, impaired coordination, and psychomotor impairment.

Advise patients to avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking olopatadine, especially when initiating therapy or increasing dosage. Warn about potential for additive impairment when driving or operating machinery.

Antipsychotics
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, and sedation. This includes risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine.

Use with caution. Monitor for increased CNS depression. Consider dose adjustments or alternative agents if side effects are bothersome. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Anxiolytics
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, and sedation. This includes benzodiazepines like lorazepam, clonazepam.

Use with caution. Monitor patients for increased sedation. Consider lower doses of either olopatadine or the anxiolytic, especially in elderly patients. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Hypnotics
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, and sedation. This includes zolpidem, zopiclone, eszopiclone.

Use with caution. Monitor patients for increased sedation. Consider lower doses of either olopatadine or the hypnotic, especially in elderly patients. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (maois)
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness and sedation. While direct interaction is less established, caution is generally advised with CNS depressants.

Use with caution. Monitor for increased CNS depression. Consider alternative antihistamines if possible. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Opioid Analgesics
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, respiratory depression, and sedation. This includes codeine, tramadol, morphine, oxycodone.

Use with caution. Monitor patients closely for increased sedation and respiratory depression. Consider lower doses of either olopatadine or the opioid. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Other Antihistamines (sedating)
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, and sedation. This includes diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine, hydroxyzine.

Avoid concomitant use of multiple sedating antihistamines. If combination is necessary, monitor closely for excessive sedation. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Sedatives
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, and sedation. This includes benzodiazepines (e.g., alprazolam, diazepam), z-drugs (e.g., zolpidem), and other hypnotics.

Use with caution. Monitor patients for increased sedation. Consider lower doses of either olopatadine or the sedative, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing CNS depression. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.

Tricyclic Antidepressants
Moderate
Database

Increased drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, dry mouth, blurred vision, and urinary retention. This includes amitriptyline, imipramine, nortriptyline.

Use with caution. Monitor for increased CNS and anticholinergic side effects. Consider dose adjustments or alternative agents if side effects are bothersome. Advise patients against driving or operating heavy machinery.
