Mechanism

Pindolol is a beta-adrenoceptor blocker that possesses intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (partial agonist activity). It stimulates as well as blocks adrenergic receptors. This allows it to prevent overstimulation of the heart by endogenous catecholamines while assuring slight receptor stimulation in patients sensitive to negative inotropic and chronotropic effects of beta blockade.

Indications

Hypertensionangina pectoris

Dosing

Adult
Initially 2.5–5 mg up to 3 times a day by mouth.

Pharmacokinetics

Half-life
about 4 h
