Mechanism

Drospirenone is a progestogen component of combined hormonal contraceptives used for effective contraception.

Indications

Contraindications

  • Avoid combined hormonal contraception if two or more risk factors for venous thromboembolism are present, including: family history of VTE in a first-degree relative aged under 45 years (especially with known prothrombotic coagulation abnormality e.g., factor V Leiden or antiphospholipid antibodies); obesity (BMI >= 30 kg/m2, avoid if BMI >= 35 kg/m2 unless no suitable alternative; caution in markedly obese adolescents).
  • Avoid combined hormonal contraception if two or more risk factors for arterial disease are present, including: family history of arterial disease in a first-degree relative aged under 45 years.
