Mechanism

Combination oral contraceptives prevent ovulation by suppressing LH and FSH levels, leading to an absence of a mid-cycle LH surge and diminished endogenous steroid levels. The combination of estrogen and progestin synergistically decreases plasma gonadotropin levels and suppresses ovulation more consistently than either component alone.
