Mechanism

The primary mechanism of action is suppression of ovulation. There may be additional efficacy from the effects of the progestin on cervical mucus and the endometrium.

Dosing

Adult
One 68 mg etonogestrel implant inserted subcutaneously in the upper inner arm; effective for 3 years. Does not need to be inserted at any particular time in the menstrual cycle.
Pediatric
For adolescents, one 68 mg etonogestrel implant inserted subcutaneously in the upper inner arm; effective for 3 years. Quick starts are possible, with insertion on the day of presentation once pregnancy has been excluded.
