Mechanism
The primary mechanism of action is suppression of ovulation. There may be additional efficacy from the effects of the progestin on cervical mucus and the endometrium.

Dosing
- Adult
- One 68 mg etonogestrel implant inserted subcutaneously in the upper inner arm; effective for 3 years. Does not need to be inserted at any particular time in the menstrual cycle.
- Pediatric
- For adolescents, one 68 mg etonogestrel implant inserted subcutaneously in the upper inner arm; effective for 3 years. Quick starts are possible, with insertion on the day of presentation once pregnancy has been excluded.
