Mechanism
Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) used topically as a keratolytic and humectant. It reduces the pH of the stratum corneum, disrupting intercorneocyte cohesion by dissolving the intercellular cement, promoting desquamation and skin renewal. At lower concentrations it acts as a moisturizer by enhancing water retention in the stratum corneum through its hygroscopic properties.
