Mechanism

Mezlocillin is a β-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Its β-lactam ring is crucial for its activity. Resistance can occur through bacterial β-lactamases or altered PBPs which prevent penicillin binding.

Dosing

Adult: streptococcal pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, Dose: 0.25–0.5 g orally every 6 hours; for severe infections prophylaxis of rheumatic fever (when an oral 0.25–1 g may be injected i.m. or i.v.—higher blood levels are drug has to be selected), less serious pneumo- produced.
