Mechanism
Nedocromil sodium is a chromone derivative that stabilizes mast cell membranes and inhibits degranulation, preventing the release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other inflammatory mediators from sensitized mast cells. It also appears to modulate chloride channel function on sensory nerves. Unlike bronchodilators, nedocromil has no direct smooth muscle relaxant activity and is effective only as prophylaxis when administered regularly before allergen or exercise exposure.
