Mechanism

Ticarcillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic, belonging to the carboxypenicillin class. Like other penicillins, it primarily exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. This action may also enhance the penetration of other antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides, into the bacterium.

Indications

Dosing

Adult
Specific standard adult dosing for normal renal function is not provided; high doses are frequently used for more severe infections and may lead to hypernatraemia.
Renal adjustment
Reduce dose to 3.2 g every eight hours if eGFR 30–60 mL/minute/1.73 m2; 1.6 g every eight hours if eGFR 10–30 mL/minute/1.73 m2; 1.6 g every twelve hours if eGFR less than 10 mL/minute/1.73 m2. Accumulation of electrolytes can occur in patients with renal failure.
Hepatic adjustment
Manufacturer advises caution in severe hepatic impairment.
