Mechanism

Norethisterone is a progestogen and a testosterone analogue. In hormone replacement therapy, it is added to long-term oestrogen therapy in women with an intact uterus to prevent cystic hyperplasia of the endometrium and possible transformation to cancer. For endometriosis, which is an oestrogen-dependent condition, it is administered to manage the condition.
